Is Wallpaper a Good or Bad Idea?

I get this question a lot: “Is wallpaper good or bad? How does it impact home value? I love the look but am hesitant to commit.”

Let’s talk about it.

A (Slightly) Traumatized Perspective

I’ll be honest—I have some wallpaper-related baggage. I’ve lived with a lot of wallpaper, including one room that had three different wallpaper patterns converging at one corner.

That last room? Had THREE different wallpapers in it. Check out where they all met at the corner of my bedroom:

Ever the rebellious teenager, I put posters on my ceiling. Yes, even the ceiling had wallpaper on it!

My last house? Layers of wallpaper stacked on top of each other, buried under drywall mud and paint. It was not pretty.

But I have to admit—wallpaper has come a long way. The right wallpaper can add depth, texture, and personality to a space in a way that paint just can’t match. It’s no longer the impossible-to-remove nightmare of decades past. In fact, there are some incredible options out there that might just make me a convert.

Things to Consider Before Taking the Wallpaper Plunge

1. How Long Will You Be in Your Home?

If you plan to sell within the next few years, be strategic about wallpaper placement. A bold statement wall might attract buyers, but entire rooms covered in niche patterns could make resale trickier. If resale is a concern, opt for easily removable wallpaper or stick to neutral, classic designs.

2. Do You Like to Change Things Up Often?

If you’re someone who gets bored with your décor quickly, traditional wallpaper might not be your best bet. Instead, consider removable wallpaper or paint + stenciling for a similar look without the long-term commitment.

3. Does a Whole Room of Wallpaper Feel Overwhelming?

You don’t have to go all-in. Wallpaper works beautifully as an accent—on a single wall, inside a bookcase, or even on a ceiling for an unexpected design moment.

The Bottom Line

Wallpaper isn’t inherently good or bad—it’s all about the application, style, and your long-term plans. With today’s improved materials and removal methods, it’s no longer a permanent decision, making it easier to embrace if you love the look.

Still unsure? Let’s chat about your project and make sure you’ve considered all of your options—from wallpaper to other finishes—so you can move forward with confidence!
